How to Change a Jaw Crusher Toggle Plate & Optimize Your Wear System

The toggle plate is widely recognized as the "mechanical fuse" of a jaw crusher. Designed to shear or bend during a non-crushable material overload, it protects the eccentric shaft and frame from catastrophic failure. However, a toggle plate replacement is often a signal that your primary wear components-the Jaw Plates-also require immediate attention.

At Duma Machinery, while we specialize in the in-house manufacturing of high-performance Jaw Plates and Cheek Plates (we do not produce toggle plates), we understand that the longevity of your toggle system depends entirely on the quality of the liners it supports.

Safety Protocols and Preparation

Before attempting to change a toggle plate, technicians must adhere to strict LOTO (Lock-Out, Tag-Out) procedures. According to ISO 21873-2 and major OEM manuals (like Metso Nordberg C-Series), you must:

Isolate Power: Ensure the motor and hydraulic power units are fully disconnected.

Support the Swing Jaw: Use a hydraulic jack or a heavy-duty hoist to secure the movable jaw in its forward position. This prevents the jaw from swinging back uncontrollably once the toggle plate is released.

Release Tension: Fully back off the tension rod springs and release any hydraulic pressure in the adjustment system.

The 8-Step Replacement Process

  1. Clear the Chamber: Ensure all rock and debris are removed from the crushing zone.
  2. Lift the Jaw Forward: Use a come-along or crane to pull the swing jaw toward the fixed jaw.
  3. Loosen Adjustment Wedges: If your crusher uses wedge adjustment, retract the wedges to create maximum clearance.
  4. Hoist the Old Plate: Using a hoist (minimum 500 kg capacity), secure the old toggle plate and carefully slide it out of the toggle seats.
  5. Clean the Seats: This is critical. Clean the toggle seats to a residue level of less than 0.1 mm. Dirt or grit here causes uneven loading and rapid wear.
  6. Install the New Plate: Align the new toggle plate (ensure it matches OEM specs for your specific Metso or Sandvik model).
  7. Reset Tension Springs: Tighten the tension rod until the spring reaches the manufacturer's specified compression length.
  8. Calibrate the CSS: After installation, re-measure the Closed Side Setting (CSS) to ensure your discharge size is accurate.

The Duma Advantage: Why Jaw Plate Quality Dictates Toggle Life

A common cause of premature toggle failure is asymmetric stress caused by low-quality or poorly fitted jaw plates.

  • Precision Fitment: Using our library of 4,000+ in-house patterns, Duma produces Jaw Plates that fit perfectly against the jaw stock. A loose or warped jaw plate creates microscopic vibrations and "shock loads" that travel through the swing jaw and prematurely fatigue the toggle plate.
  • Proprietary Metallurgy: Our Mn18Cr2 and Mn22Cr2 alloys are cast in our 42,000 m² foundry. This ensures a stable work-hardening rate, keeping the crushing surface flat and the pressure on the toggle system linear and predictable.
  • PT Testing Integrity: We perform mandatory Penetrant Testing (PT) on all our liners. By ensuring our jaw plates are free of internal cracks, we prevent the sudden shifting of loads that can snap a toggle plate unnecessarily.

Post-Installation Monitoring

After replacing the toggle plate and verifying your Duma Jaw Plates, run the crusher empty for 15 to 30 minutes. Check for abnormal heating in the toggle seats and listen for any "clashing" sounds which may indicate the tension rod is too loose.
